A new development aims to make it much easier for nostalgia fans to play older games on PC. RecompLauncher could make classic PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo games much easier to access on PC, if Reddit user Ned Leeds1’s announcement is to be believed.
How Does It Work?
Players can play a lot of older games now, but it’s an enormous hassle. Game preservation and reverse-engineering communities constantly search for ways to access classic titles. The result is often a complicated process that turns off average players.
For those new to this, recompilation is different from emulation. Emulators reproduce the behavior of the game’s original hardware while you play. Recompilation does a lot of that work ahead of time. The result is a smoother, more natural-feeling experience inside the game.
Recompilation is becoming more popular in the gaming community, but the process is complex, so mostly hardcore players do it now. Average, casual players typically don’t want to spend time scouring forums, Discord servers, and Reddit communities forthe different methods required by different games.
RecompLauncher seeks to eliminate many of the roadblocks. If successful, the program will give players a central hub to access classic games and relive the glory of their childhood. Laws still exist, so players will need to obtain their own legal copies of the game. The RecompLauncher service directs players to where they can find one.
The Impact of RecompLauncher
For sports gamers, the impact could be huge. Who doesn’t miss the experience we had in NFL 2K5, NHL 14, or the old SmackDown vs. Raw games? Add the old Tiger Woods PGA Tour games to the list for me, too. The thought of dialing up (pun intended) those games again makes me feel the holiday season early.
Even if you’re not into older sports titles, the possibilities are still enticing. Recent efforts like N64: Recompiled and Zelda 64: Recompiled are popular with fans in the recompiling community. The fact that games can be supported in widescreen, run at better framerates, and be modded helps set the technology apart from simple emulation.
