Waking up on public transport in your underwear is bad enough. Waking up in an alien meat factory surrounded by grotesque creatures is considerably worse. Gennady turns that nightmare into a brutally strange roguelike platformer, sending players tearing through hostile environments with fists, futuristic weapons and a whole lot of rage.

Published by Sobaka Studio LLP and developed by Feed 64, it’s available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £16.74 on the Xbox Store.

An Alien Nightmare With A Very Unusual Hero

Gennady’s peaceful bus journey takes a spectacularly unpleasant turn when he finds himself trapped in a grimy extraterrestrial factory, dressed in little more than his underwear. With chthonic creatures looking to make him their next meal, survival means punching, dashing and blasting a path through the nightmare in search of a way home.

The game uses a striking hand-drawn visual style, combining frame-by-frame animation with stark black-and-white imagery and splashes of colour. Its grotesque, pseudo-noir world looks more like a twisted comic book than a conventional platforming adventure, giving the carnage a distinctive identity.

Turn Yourself Into A Living Projectile

Combat goes well beyond standard brawling. Gennady can unleash furious dashes to smash through obstacles and enemies, while lasers and other alien weaponry provide additional ways to deal with the local wildlife. Rage Mode takes things further, boosting speed and destructive power while making you temporarily invulnerable. The more effectively you dispatch enemies, the longer the rampage can last.

Procedurally generated biomes keep each run unpredictable, while upgrades, shields, ammunition and collectable artifacts offer opportunities to build a stronger version of Gennady. Colossal bosses await at the end of each biome, providing tougher tests before the next stage of the nightmare.

And then Gennady goes about offering a curious twist on permanent death through its Alley of the Dead system. Players can use ammunition to carry collected artifacts into their next run, potentially giving them a stronger starting position. Comic-book pages scattered throughout the adventure also help reveal more of the story and its extraterrestrial secrets.

Time To Rage Against The Alien Machine

With its unusual premise, savage combat and deliberately grotesque comic-book presentation, Gennady looks to offer something a little different for players who enjoy challenging roguelike action. Dying is part of the process, but every run offers another chance to improve your build, take on bigger threats and fight your way closer to home.

Gennady is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, priced at £16.74 on the Xbox Store. Just don’t expect to get your clothes back without a fight.
