Helldivers 3 Could Happen, But It Needs To Be Very Different From Helldivers 2

Arrowhead is not against the idea of Helldivers 3, but would have a stipulation that it would need to be very different from its current Sony-backed live service.
In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, CCO Johan Pilestedt spilled the beans that it would take a lot to actually bring them to make a third entry to the co-op shooter, with basically two routes — either it’s drastically different to Helldivers 2 or players stopped showing up to spread democracy.
Now the reason behind this mindset is pretty simple; if they released a game similar to another that’s ongoing, they’d be basically competing with themselves, as like it or not, a good chunk of Helldivers players would probably drop Helldivers 2 for the new shiny sequel. But, with players bringing their friends and such, it doesn’t need a new entry.
“We see players as the actual engine of the game: they’re the ones bringing in friends, making memes, and keeping the game alive. When you have an active community doing that, you don’t need a sequel.
The industry is panicking because the old live-service tricks don’t work anymore. And the biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2. It only makes sense to make a distinct sequel if it’s so different that both games can exist side by side. For now, making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum.”
To me, this is a rational mindset here, they want to continue to foster the crowd they’ve attained over the years and fear making a game too similar to something they’ve already done would lead to some people sticking to one side, so taking a stance to only make a new entry if either some big changes happen or if players lose interest is a pretty solid plan.
