Fancy swapping the usual survival game routine for something a little more experimental? Honeycomb: The World Beyond has now arrived on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation and PC, inviting players to leave Earth behind and turn an alien planet into their very own scientific playground.

Developed by Frozen Way and published by Snail Games, this sci-fi survival adventure puts you in the role of Hennessy, a bioengineer sent to the mysterious world of Sota7. There are resources to gather and dangers to overcome, but this isn’t simply a case of chopping down trees and building a shelter. Here, scientific curiosity could be the key to survival.

Welcome To Sota7

Sota7 is a planet of remarkable contrasts. Its landscapes are vibrant and varied, but beneath that beauty sits an ecosystem that doesn’t necessarily appreciate having an outsider poking around.

As Hennessy, you’ll explore different biomes, scan unfamiliar flora and fauna and learn how the various species behave. Some encounters may be harmless, while others could quickly turn an innocent scientific expedition into a scramble for survival.

The further you venture from your base, the more important that knowledge becomes. Understanding the environment isn’t just there for flavour – it can help determine how well equipped you are to survive it.

Science Is Your Secret Weapon

There is a huge emphasis on bioengineering.

Rather than simply collecting whatever nature provides, Hennessy can experiment with the properties of plants and animals. Plant properties can be synthesised, while animal DNA can be manipulated to produce different physical traits.

That creates a rather intriguing experimental loop. Discover something unusual, take it back to the laboratory, experiment with it and see what the resulting creation can do. Crossbreeding, grafting and other bioengineering systems give your research a practical purpose, potentially unlocking new ways to deal with the challenges Sota7 throws your way.

And yes, there is always the possibility that an experiment doesn’t quite go according to plan.

Build A Home Among The Stars

Of course, even the most enthusiastic bioengineer needs somewhere to work.

Honeycomb gives players the opportunity to establish and expand a base of operations, gathering resources and constructing the facilities required to live and continue their research. The laboratory sits at the heart of the operation, providing somewhere to process samples and conduct experiments.

You can also use planning tools to help design your base, making the construction side of the experience a little more approachable for those who’d rather spend their time investigating alien life than obsessing over the perfect floor plan.

Survival With A Scientific Twist

The appeal of Honeycomb: The World Beyond ultimately comes from the combination of its different systems. Exploration feeds into research, research can improve your ability to survive, and survival allows you to venture further into Sota7 in search of more discoveries.

It’s a familiar survival foundation, but the bioengineering element gives the adventure a more unusual identity. Instead of simply asking how you’re going to survive the night, Honeycomb is also asking what you can learn from the world around you – and what you might be able to create with that knowledge.

Honeycomb: The World Beyond is now available on Xbox Series X|S (via the Xbox Store), PlayStation and PC. The planet is waiting, your laboratory is calling and, hopefully, your latest experiment doesn’t have teeth.
