If you thought skate. had already given San Vansterdam enough room to cause trouble, Season 5 is about to make the playground considerably bigger.
EA and Full Circle push live Season 5 today, titled Big Air Retreat, bringing a huge new mountain destination, fresh tricks, revamped progression and bigger ways to skate with the community.
The new season looks to be a sizeable evolution for the free-to-play skateboarding experience, taking players away from the hustle of the city and into the aptly named S.U.M.R. Camp Mega Park. Alongside the new location, Full Circle is introducing new social modes, progression changes and plenty of fresh cosmetics and brands.

S.U.M.R. Camp Is The Star Attraction
The biggest addition in Season 5 is undoubtedly S.U.M.R. Camp, or the Super Ultra Mega Resort Camp Mega Park if you’re feeling particularly formal.
Located across the bay from San Vansterdam, this enormous mountain playground is designed around speed, verticality and big-air skating. More than 30 different routes wind their way through the environment, giving players plenty of opportunities to find their own lines down the mountain.
The setting itself should offer a welcome change of pace from the urban streets. Rocky ramps, wooden structures, bridges, pine forests and various natural hazards make up the sprawling destination, while areas such as Rockbottom Lodge and the Fishing Hole add a little more character to the resort.
And yes, there is even a particularly nasty-sounding run called Bloody Gulch.
Not everyone gets unlimited access immediately
S.U.M.R. Camp will initially be available through the skate. Premium Pass when Season 5 lands today, before wider access follows later in the season.
Those without Premium access will eventually be able to purchase temporary access using Rip Chips, meaning the mountain won’t remain locked away forever.
There is also a six-week story event waiting at the camp, centred around the disappearance of City Councilor Slappy. Players will work alongside Izzy to find out what happened, with the story unfolding through a mixture of missions and Bounties.
New tricks should give skaters more to master
A new location is all well and good, but Season 5 isn’t simply about finding bigger ramps to launch yourself from.
Underflips are being added to skate., with a whopping 16 variations arriving alongside the update. There are also four new Footplant variants, including Judo Footplant, BS Footplant, FS Footplant and Fast Plant.
Full Circle says Footplants have also been refined to make them feel smoother and more natural, while pumping is being improved to help traversal feel better.
For anyone who has already spent considerable time learning skate.’s trick system, Season 5 therefore offers some fresh techniques to add to the repertoire.
Block Parties are getting serious
The social side of skate. is also being expanded.
Block Parties are becoming an official Meetup mode in Season 5, allowing up to 150 players to take part in large-scale skating events across San Vansterdam. Rather than simply throwing everyone into a conventional competition, the mode is built around a more fluid drop-in experience.
There will be four different Block Party formats:
- Invitational
- Pro Comp
- Mixer
- Block Blitz
Players can also set up their own Spot Battles through the Throwdowns menu, choosing where the battle takes place and how many competitors take part.
That should give San Vansterdam a rather different feel when Season 5 gets underway, particularly for players who enjoy the social side of skate. as much as the trick system itself.
Progression gets a major rethink
Season 5 also marks a substantial change to how players progress through the game.
The new system puts Bounties at its heart, with Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Endless, Crew and Event Bounties offering different ways to earn rewards. Non-expiring Challenges, Spotlight Challenges, OTLs and Speedlines will also contribute to progression.
It sounds like an attempt to give players more freedom over how they spend their time rather than funneling everyone towards the same objectives.
The skate.Pass is getting refreshed alongside those changes, with new rewards and plenty of additional cosmetics to chase.
More brands are joining the skate. lineup
Season 5 is also bringing a fresh collection of brands into the game, including Converse, Baker, Deathwish, Online Ceramics, Primitive, Welcome, There/Unity, Krooked and Venture.
Existing names such as Nike SB, Vans, Dickies and adidas are also receiving refreshed cosmetics, while skate.Pass holders can expect further additions from brands including adidas Terrex and Carpet Company.
There will be a new Vans Starter Pack too, alongside the returning Dem Bones packs.
More of San Vansterdam is still on the way
S.U.M.R. Camp isn’t the only new skating destination arriving during Season 5.
Mid-season, players will be able to check out Parry Point Park, a new street skating spot in Hedgemont along Blue Light Beach. Construction is also getting underway at the former Hedgemont Community Park, suggesting there could be more to discover as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, elements of S.U.M.R. Camp will spill back into San Vansterdam, with the Block Party Plaza receiving a more relaxed, rustic makeover.
And that’s not all. Season 5 will also bring 17 new tracks to the soundtrack, with even more music promised for the mid-season update.
skate. is heading into a big fifth season
With a huge new area, a revamped progression system, new tricks and multiplayer events capable of bringing 150 skaters together, skate. Season 5 looks like a substantial step forward for the game.
The Big Air Retreat update arrives today, although some of its content will follow later through the mid-season update. For players who have been waiting for a reason to return to San Vansterdam, there should be plenty here to get the board rolling again.
And if nothing else, S.U.M.R. Camp looks like the perfect place to find out just how badly a 30-foot landing can go.
